Lindsay Ley part of winning team in functional clothing design contest

2013 Dec 18

Lindsay Ley of Dodgeville, Wis., was part of a team from the Functional Clothing Design class in UW-Stout’s apparel design and development program that tied for third place in an international contest.

Ley, majoring in apparel design and development, was part of the team that designed a high visibility garment for wastewater plant workers.

The award-winners in the 10th annual Safety Products Student Design Challenge were announced at the Industrial Fabrics Association International Conference in Orlando.

The contest drew 15 entries from around the world. Students were asked to design original products that protect people or property from hazards such as extreme temperatures, chemical or biological exposure and falling.

First place went to a student from Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland, who designed motorcycle riding overalls with torso protectors.

Each team won $300 and a crystal trophy.

The Functional Clothing Design class, in which students learn about technical aspects of clothing, is taught by Associate Professor Gindy Neidermyer. In 2011, a UW-Stout team won the international contest.
